Founder’s Signature Challenge — The Consciousness Equation

Consciousness — awareness, experience, subjectivity —
is the deepest mystery in science.
Neuroscience, physics, cosmology, computation, philosophy, information theory:
all offer clues, but none provide a complete, testable, physical definition.
This challenge asks you to attempt what no field has fully solved:
Define consciousness using only the principles of physics, information, energy, and structure — and justify your definition rigorously.
There is no single correct answer.
Only clarity, courage, and intellectual discipline.

1. The Goal
You must construct a physically grounded framework that answers:
“What physical conditions must a system satisfy in order to be conscious?”
Your answer must not rely on philosophy alone.
It must be expressible using physics:
• energy flow
• entropy
• information
• feedback
• complexity
• causal structure
• computation
• physical states
• measurable properties
You may reference any domain — but the answer must be rooted in physical principles.

2. Core Requirements (All Must Be Addressed)
To complete the Signature Challenge, your submission must include:
(a) A Physical Definition of Consciousness
A clear, testable definition, expressed in physical or information-theoretic terms.
Examples (not answers):
• integrated information
• causal closure
• energy minimization patterns
• recursive self-models
• informational self-reference
Your definition must be original or clearly justified.

(b) A Measurable Quantity or Marker
You must propose at least ONE measurable parameter that could indicate consciousness in:
• biological organisms
• artificial systems
• unknown or alien structures
Examples (not answers):

• dynamic causal complexity
• entropy rate
• mutual information loops
• free energy minimization
• physical coherence over time
You must say WHY it matters.

Describe the moment when a system that is “processing information” becomes:
“aware.”
This is the hardest part.
You must define the threshold or qualitative shift that produces consciousness.

Every good physical theory must generate predictions.
Provide at least ONE testable prediction about consciousness, such as:
• conditions under which AI *could* become conscious
• conditions under which biological consciousness fails
• signatures detectable in brain or machine states
• physical structures that cannot support awareness
Your predictions do not need experiments —
just logical consequences.

Complete ANY of these and your submission becomes extraordinary:
• derive an equation or functional that measures your consciousness metric
• map consciousness onto energy flow in spacetime

• link awareness to entropy, thermodynamics, or quantum information
• explain why the universe allows conscious systems at all
These are rare accomplishments.
